This will provide extra room for the wires making installation easier. As the mortar does not bond the wall plate to the wall steel straps are used to ensure that the roof structure remains secure. More often than not the roof structure is assembled from a series of roof trusses. These rest on wooden wall plates and are designed to span the walls of the house.

This is to let the common rafter fit in between later. When constructing a gable roof the ceiling joists are laid out slightly differently. Fixings used to connect the roof structure to the wall plate should be specified according to the roof construction and exposure of the site. For electrical boxes crowded with wires you may want a wall plate with greater depth.

Generally wall plates are in lengths of not less than 3 m.
